Practical size limit for text file

I'm running into issues opening and saving a file of 1.6 MB. Is that too large?
Does it make a difference whether it's .rtf or .tmdx ?

TM 2021 presented no problems with my files, whether .rtf or .tmdx. But TM2024 takes a long time to load a big file. Often program crashes when I try to save the file. The program with 3 files loaded uses 250 MB of RAM. Does that make sense?

I'm ready to go back to TM 2021 if I can't get this fixed.
