Savoy Italic font

Post by pedrober »

If I use the italic version of the font, the resulting text is longer than the same text in the regular font. I know that Jan Tschichold designed the first version of Sabon (for traditional print) with the same size for texts in regular and italic font, but longer texts in italic is really odd. Am I wrong?
To get the same horizontal size of texts in both styles, it's necessary to apply a -25% tracking to the italic font.
Curiously, this doesn't happen with the version of the same font sold by Fontspring. See: https://www.fontspring.com/fonts/fontsite/savoy#about
The same applies to the bold style.
Regards.

Thanks for your post. We/SoftMaker are not the designers of the fonts. We are providing the fonts only as they came from the the manufacturers.

I have forwarded the details to the font provider...

For either italics or bold text to occupy exactly the same horizontal space as Roman (upright) text is extremely unusual. My experience in desktop publishing over at least 30 years, has been that italics take up less space horizontally, and bold text always takes up more space. I don't think I have ever encountered a typeface for which this is not true.

There is nothing wrong with our Savoy font.

The line lengths of Sabon are also identical across weights and variations:

https://www.myfonts.com/collections/sabon-font-linotype

They also have an explanation: "Its bold, and particularly its italic styles are limited by the requirements of Linotype casting machines, forcing the character widths of a given letter to match between styles, giving the italic its characteristic narrow f."

See my first message in this thread. In your version, different styles require different space.
See too this other thread: https://forum.softmaker.com/viewtopic.php?f=264&t=20095

I have discovered that the problem reported in the first message of this thread is due to the wrong size of the space character in the italic version of the Savoy font. If the text has no spaces, the size of the regular and the italic version is the same, faithful to the original design.
