Equation Editor, and Mathematical Formulas in Linux Version of Softmaker (or Freemaker) ... is ever going to happen??

Post by Sacolevas »

Hello!

I am using FreeOffice in Linux since 2019 and I like the fact that the editor has good compatibility with .docx files and is lightweight compared with Libreoffice. In my opinion, the existence of a Microsoft Office alternative is more important in Linux than in Windows, because most people using Windows have access to a version of Office one way or another. And using Office through Wine doesn't work very well.

In office you have either the Equation Editor or the option to use LaTeX notation in Word. In FreeOffice TextMaker you cannot use this, but the main issue is that equation editor doesn't exists even in the paid version in Linux (the advertising says that in Softmaker Office, the Windows version has equation editor but not the Linux version) !!!! :(

This has kept me from buying the Software. It is really that difficult to implement in Linux? As I mentioned before, Softmaker could make an impact in Linux because of the lack of good alternatives (LibreOffice has lots of compatibility issues with Microsoft Office, even if you save documents in ODT format). Without being an Expert, I am aware that AbiWord (which is simpler piece of Software and made for Linux) allows inserting mathematical formulas in LaTeX notation. So this means that implementing the insertion of equations (at least in LaTeX format) in Softmaker is a realistic option, right?

Thanks for your attention and this great Software, I hope this can be done in the near future. I want to buy a great office suite for Linux!

Hello, I have edited the previous post in order to be clearer. I hope someone from Softmaker can answer and hopefully the issue can be addressed by someone in the programming department!

Is this a topic of interest for someone else? Hello?

Has something changed in the plans of the developers to add a formula editor to the Linux version. Made a really nice product and would really like to see a formula editor to completely move away from having to use MS.

Please do this, it is a big failure for all the many many academic research people all over the World who would otherwise buy your product!

Good morning.

I can understand the demand for integrated software which would then cooperate with the main program.

But PSE consider that there are specific tools for specific tasks, which has many advantages that I should not need to list here (we can do that, if you must know).
As you have mentioned LaTeX in your OP, I had to search the package resources for my own distribution – Debian – and found “KLatexFormula”, a program which lets you create a formula from LaTeX. I mention this, because an “integrated” formula-editor, provided by SoftMaker, would not look much different nor work in a significantly different way.

People who develop this kind of software and none other, are usually the best address for feature requests, eventual bug reports and LaTex- and Formula-related questions.

If ever SoftMaker produce something similar, they must consider the already existing software, do comparisons and only then take decisions. To do better than those folks who have invested time and effort in the very same kind of project, will .., let's say: not be easy.

I am convinced that there are a bunch of programs around which allow to copy&paste readily composed formulas into just any kind of text-processing software *AND* convinced that yet another SoftMaker-produced formula-editor will work in the identical way.

This may or may not be a good thing.

Hi,

If the above is not yet motivating enough, please add the equation editor to the Linux version. For engineers - and researchers, this is a fundamental tool. For the time being, I need to abandon SoftMaker 2024 and use LibreOffice because I just cannot do a presentation without an equation.

Thanks!

More Motivation.

When I was a “professional Software-Developer” (“They” called me that), I made a lot of money (fast) by developing the same software, practically all the time, which has – in diverse incarnations – existed already for 20 or 30 years. That was neither Equation-Editors nor Automation (robotics or what), but so-called “Business-Applications”. Good to prevent folks from taking up a pen and think.

But when magazines with titles like “Business-Intelligence” say that everybody now uses something else, everybody will want you to provide something else.

Create yet another Equation-Editor and the market will be happy. The market. The market.
