Installation failed

Using FreeOffice TextMaker 2018 (rev 973.1103) 64bit. Notice for downloading new service pack shows up, so I download FreeOffice 2018 for Mac. Installation starts and proceeds, but repeatedly fails. This is NOT Apple refusing to install. It is a window that reads: "An error occurs during installation. The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." I'm stuck as to how to fix.

Remove the program folder of the old installation and empty the trash. In rare cases, the Apple installer doesn't want to install over existing installs.
