Special characters--what am I looking at and how to...

The attached file is a screen capture with special characters showing. The text is pasted in and the first two lines end with a long dash looking character. What is it and how do I do a search and replace of the hard returns with whatever this character is? The reason is when I past it into an online editing box, the hard returns result in a double space instead of the format I want wich is single space.

1. at the end of "depths of" and "which" you have a line break
2. at the end of o"own" you have a paragraph break

In TextMaker's Search and Replace dialog click on Special and you'll find those 2 breaks there
