Files not saving correctly

As long as I keep my two files open..all is well. If I save and close the files, the path between files is lost on tabs that are not 'open'. Only the cells on the active sheet on the screen are saved with the complete path. Using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. How can I save files that open with all the information. Can't find any toggle or preference that might be the culprit.
