Quickie question - is that Office NX Universal offer for new customers only or would purchasing a years subscription extend my existing one?

You would have to buy a new subscription, then turn off automatic renewals for the old subscription. When the old subscription expires, swap in the product key of the new version (the expiration dialog offers this option).
