Strange problem

Post by Dona13 »

I use SoftMaker Freeoffice 2024 on my windows 11 laptop and am very happy with this free software. Thank you very much for offering it.

In fact I am so satisfied that I tried to install it on my Linux laptop. I followed the steps from the official site. I use Linux Mint 22.1 64bit on two
laptops. After installing Freeoffice 2024 on both I tried the three pieces (TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentation) and on one laptop they
seemed to work just fine. But on the other laptop there is something going on: when I try to open no matter which one of the three it either
opens or , sometimes, I get a black screen for one secomd ant than i am brought to the Linux logon screen. I insert the password and go back,
try to open the app again and usually the second time it works. But if I go and try to use different functions in the Softmaker app it might work or not,
returning to the Linux logon. For instance, if I go to File, Options it happens often, but not always.

It seems very random and bothering. The two Linux machines where I installed it have the same Linux Mint version and almost the same
settings and tweaks, the only difference being that on the machine where Freoffice seems to work fine I just did a Linux clean install before
installing Freeoffice but the machine where the problem occurs has been installed a long time ago and I did on it all the regular updates and
the major ones too (those who upgrade Linux from a version to another).

I want to use Freeoffice instead of Libre Ofiice (that installs itself when installing Linux Mint) because Freeoffice is lighter on ressources,
it manages my Excel files passwords (which Libre Office does not) and over all I like it better, I am used to it from my Windows machine.

I know that it is hard to diagnose this behavior but I am writting you with the hope that maybe you have already had other reports on that and
know how to fix it or have a workaround.

Thank you, very good day

P.S. - Looking over the other posts here I see that many users have problems with Softmaker Freeoffice only when they upgraded to latest Linux (22, 22.1), which is not OK I think. When a new Linux gets out it is normal to upgrade it, not to reinstall it from scratch and every time loose a lot of time to re-configure the computer and Linux. This is in fact true for no matter what OS one may use. Thank you.

This seems to be an issue related to Linux Mint. Apparently their latest release had issues when people did an upgrade. It does not have anything todo with SoftMaker. If this was the case then people who use Ubuntu and Debian (the distributions that Mint uses as abase) would have been reporting issues like this, and is not the case.

If your this machine is old, then you can try disabling OpenGL and XIM and then check this issue again. Check here for details.
