Disappearing data

Post by Léon »

More and more often, data suddenly disappear from documents: words or numbers disappear or data are copied from one tab to another tab, overwriting data.

I know that this is the free version, but nevertheless I don't find this acceptable.

In the example the solution is easy, but very often it is not at all.

Are you using any cloud storage for these files?

This can only happen if there is any file handling related operating system corruption, otherwise FreeOffice never edit any of the document itself.

Yes, all my daily documents are in pCloud.

Thank you for this reply!

I have the impression that unwanted changes are made when a document is left open for some time. So now I try to close documents immediately after use.

Sorry that I accused PlanMaker of this.

In fact I am happy that PlanMaker is not the cause, because basically I am very, very content with this office program.

I often recommend it to other people.

Response pCloud Team:

"Thank you for contacting pCloud support team.

There is no risk of documents being compromised in pCloud when they are open. You can leave your documents open for as long as you like without affecting the integrity of the files.

However, if you edit the file while it's open-especially through synced folders or third-party apps-then changes might sync and affect the version stored in the cloud
".

It's not PlanMaker's fault and it's not pCloud's fault.

So why am I losing data in documents?

Dear SuperTech,

All these documents accompany my daily life. I open and close most of them every day.

When you close a document, the question always comes whether you want to save the changes. Of course, I always save the changes.

So I wonder if your advice is meant to be serious.

Thank you for your diligence in saving files regularly—this is indeed a best practice we always recommend.

Regarding the data loss you experienced, this doesn't appear to be caused by FreeOffice. To help verify:
  • Save your documents to a local drive (rather than cloud/network locations)
  • Test if the issue persists

Maybe I should reverse the copy direction.

I would then edit the documents on the SSD. Indeed, I think the chances of ‘corruption’ would then be zero.

Then I could/should copy them to the pCloud drive every evening. Just in case my Windows disappears. (Two years ago, I lifted my computer while it was on: everything gone).

Until now, I copy the important documents from the pCloud drive to the SSD every Saturday, as a kind of extra backup.

So that could be done the other way round. (More effort!).

pCloud can be configured to handle this for you automatically.

Hello woody44,

This is exactly the thought I got up with today: I need to handle pCloud differently.

Thanks for your link. I haven't checked it out yet, but (of course) I will soon.
