missing subscript and superscript

Hi

I'm a new user, so excuse if I'm missing something. I want to be able to format characters into sub/superscript and I can't find any way of doing it. I looked at the user manual and these buttons should appear next to font colour and other character format options (strikethrough) but on my toolbar they aren't there. I can't find them through 'add buttons' either. The command group "character" doesn't look like depicted in the manual. Shortcut keys don't work without the rhs numberpad on my laptop.

What else can I do to access these?
