Chapters and Headers

Post by SFraser »

Hi
I started a document and created several pages. I then created a chapter for a couple of pages that I wanted in Landscape. Then I created a new chapter and returned the document back to Portrait. That worked perfectly except the header and footer on the first few pages (before the Chapter Break) stopped and the 2 subsequent chapters didn't have a header or footer. I understand that is how the functionality of chapters works. However, is there any setting I can use which will allow me to use the same header/footer throughout the document - probably similar in functionality to "same as previous" in Word?
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it makes any difference but I created a new template which I saved. The document above was a new document based on the template I created.

Did you use master pages, or not?

I just created a sample document as you described. I first created a 2-page document, with different left and right headers. I also set it so that new chapters always appear on right-hand pages. Then I copied the entire text from the first two pages to the clipboard.

I then inserted a chapter break, and both headers followed perfectly. I repeated to create chapter 3, and the headers both followed. Then I created chapter 4. The headers followed. I changed the page orientation from portrait to landscape. The headers survived. I then created chapter 5 by inserting another chapter break. The headers still survived. I changed chapter 5 back to portrait orientation, and the headers survived.

I don't know why your headers stopped when you created chapter 2. Did you use chapter break or section break to create your new chapters?

Thanks for your help. Yesterday was my first day using TextMaker (I've got it on a 30 day free trial) and I didn't realise the full potential of Master pages. I think that is what I've done wrong. While I'd seen references to them in the help files I had thought they were similar to a first page (in a document or chapter) that was different from the others - I now realise that there's a lot more to them than that.

Thanks again. :)

I did not use master pages to generate the sample document I used for testing header behavior.

If you have not done so yet, I strongly urge you to download the use manual so you can have the PDF available off-line for reference.

Yes, I'll do that as I've been looking at it and it is really informative.

Thanks again for all your help.
