Changing Which Devices Are Activated With My Product Key

Hi,
I have a free product key that only allows up to 3 devices being activated with it at once. There is a device that no longer has the activated software installed. Therefore, in order to free up product key usage, I would like to remove the device from the product key. How do I do this, or does it occur when the software is already off of the original activated device?

You can always request a second/new product key when the first key is used up.
