Change background colour of objects and text boxes

I want to change the background colour for a text box or a line object such as an arrow. I select the object>properties>fill>solid colour>more colours. I then visually select (match) a colour using the colour swatch provided. I then select OK and then OK again - expecting to find my chosen colour in the text box. This does not work - a colour does appear but not that which I selected.

It appears that only black and shades of grey actually work - no colours!
