Formatting an Epub book

I'm using the home version of Softmaker Office. When I look at the comparison between the home and the Universal versions, the only additional feature Universal has that I may need is the Epub export. Right now my plan is to save a file as a PDF and then use Calibre to convert it to Epub. I suspect there are other aspects to TextMaker's Epub feature that may make it useful to me. Could someone talk to me about that?

I think I would also benefit from hearing from someone about Epub formatting in general. Tips, techniques, wise advice, conventions & etc.
