No, but you can completely disable the sheet grid in the menu ("View").

There are many things that don't work in MS Excel. They caused me to look for a substitute. Don't be so myopic!

In a spreadsheet, all cells in a row share the same height. All cells in a column share the same width. I think it would be quite surprising to a user if pasting something changes the height or width of totally unrelated cells.

Go to the View tab of the ribbon and uncheck the checkbo "Show sheet grid".
