Question about variable fields such as "Print date"

Suppose I am writing a simple letter, per the example in the manual. I put a print date field into the letter. If I print the letter tomorrow, it will have tomorrow's date. Now suppose I archive the letter and then open it a year later. Will the letter then show that day's date, i.e., not the date on which the letter was printed/sent? (I'm trying to imagine when or for what purpose I might use this field type.)

For that purpose, you should use the field "Create date".
