This was a major feature I was missing. Works well with all files I've tested.

This is really the number one feature I'm missing in the whole of Softmaker Office for Linux. Whenever I recommend Softmaker (and I do this regularly), I always mention this caveat.

Using SoftMaker Office 2021 on Ubuntu (PopOS!) 20.04. During updates from the apt repository, the mime-type and file handling registration of which file types can be opened using Softmaker are being reconfigured.
